What to do if you've been drinking and you were supposed to drive home

So you’ve dealt with managing your time, getting adjusted, getting involved, and making friends — you’ve still got stuff to think about. Like what if you’re the designated driver and you’ve been drinking? First of all, DON’T DRIVE. If you’ve been drinking, you cannot drive home. Remember that even if you’ve been drinking and your buzz is gone, it’s not ok to drive home. You are still impaired. Don’t take any chances.

Here’s what you can do:

Find a ride home— with a SOBER driver. It doesn’t make sense for you not to drive if you’re only going to get into the car with someone ELSE who’s been drinking. If you can’t tell who’s been drinking and who hasn’t, call a friend who didn’t go out that night and see if he or she can pick you up to take you home.

Call a taxi. Write at least two taxi numbers down and keep them in your wallet so you’ll always have them handy.

If you’re with a friend that lives on campus, or nearby, see if you can crash with them.

Don’t stay out all night without calling home. If you live at home, your parents may worry. Just let them know you’re staying over at a friend’s place— give them the phone number or make sure they have your cell phone number. That’s all you need to do.

Don’t make this a habit. If you’ve got your car and need to drive it home, don’t drink. For ways to keep yourself in check, see How NOT to Drink When You Need to Drive Home .
